The Bad President

Probably the best movie so far this year, The Bad President is Harvey Keitel's most gripping dramatic role to date.

Keitel portrays the tragic character of Leon Botstein, president of a small liberal arts college, whose uncontrollable habits lead him down a path too horrible to contemplate. The film is full of intense scenes, such as the harrowing "Show me you know how to conduct Tchaikovsky - show me with your hands!" masturbation scene, and the already famous "betting scene," where Botstein tries to offset his expensive wine and brie habit by betting with Dean Stuart Levine (artfully portrayed by Jerry Lewis) on the outcome of the intramural softball playoffs. A truly terrifying film, Bad President takes place in a nightmare landscape of rural decay and apathetic onlookers. For those who can handle it, definitely one of the most intense films of the decade so far. Recommended. 115 minutes. Unrated.
